Make no mistake, Deadman Wonderland is gory. Within the first five minutes, an entire classroom is painted with blood, and a girl's severed head gets tossed across a room. The series is infinitely more Deadman than it is Wonderland, and it's fabulous for those of us who like their anime dark and twisted. And it is certainly extremely twisted. Even at the prison, there's some kind of strange system that hasn't been explain yet, where the prisoners’ necks explode (via Battle Royale-esque GPS collars) if they don't keep resetting a timer with candy. With candy! This whole show is full of beautifully mangled juxtapositions—prison vs. theme park, death by bombs vs. life by candy, Red Man vs. albino girl. Deadman… versus Wonderland. It's almost as poetic as it is exciting.

This is one of those shows that tells you nothing, but makes you ask everything. It's very frustrating. But it's such a fresh and unique show that I can't help but need to know more about this world. If I only follow three shows this season, Deadman Wonderland will be one of them.

It's late into the Spring Preview, but Deadman Wonderland was worth waiting for. It has a premise unlike anything I've seen before, and that doesn't even include half the things that happened in the first episode. At some point in the future, Tokyo is destroyed in an anomalous geological incident called the Red Hole. In an effort to rebuild the city, a company decides to erect a prison on the grounds of the tragedy. Called Deadman Wonderland, it's an amusement park that not only uses prison labor to build and maintain the place, but also uses the prisoners as the stars of its shows.

Already, this is a fascinating premise. It's not a new concept to use prisoners as entertainment, but having a penitentiary amusement park is one that's already so interesting that the idea itself could fuel an entire series. But this series one-ups it by adding the central mystery: middle schooler Ganta is the sole survivor of a horrific supernatural mass murder that leaves all of his classmates dead. He remembers the perpetrator only by the nickname he himself gives him—the Red Man (Red Man? Red Hole? Yeah? Yeah?), an apparition that appeared floating outside of the classroom windows. However, due to the lack of evidence to the contrary, and one especially damning video, Ganta is convicted as the murderer, and is put on Death Row at Deadman Wonderland. Throw in a mysterious mitten-wearing albino girl and the public defender/owner of the amusement park, and you've got a first episode that throws out unanswered questions like confetti.

Mitsuru Adachi loves baseball, and it shows. Cross Game never looks better than when it's in the midst of a game. Pitching, fielding, and running motions are carefully researched and illustrated, and baseball poses are drawn for maximum (but still naturalistic) cool. Uniforms are lovingly designed, equipment is lovingly detailed, and each play lovingly staged. Honestly the series' animation, even at the height of a game, isn't anything to be proud of, but its use of unconventional editing, be it fragmented, elliptical, or even intellectual, to communicate the impact of in-game events is. As is its canny musical escalation and driving use of Kotaro Nakagawa's distinctive score. The character designs are simple, even by Adachi's minimalist standards, the crowd shots are some of the worst ever drawn (really, did the animators get their kids to draw those faces?), and the cloud-pans are getting really old, but what else is new? If you've gotten this far into the series, you've already come to terms with its stylistic shortcomings. And thankfully, the worst of them—i.e. the ones that worked counter to Adachi's customary understatement—have been curbed.

I first encountered Mitsuru Adachi via Touch. The series was one of the first to open my eyes to anime's potential and I credit it, along with Kare Kano and Berserk, with transforming me from a casual fan to a heavy-duty fanatic. To this day I rank it among anime's stone-cold masterpieces. I mention this so as to put the following in its proper context: By the end of these episodes I wasn't comparing Cross Game to Touch any more. I wasn't lining Ko up next to Tatsuya, I wasn't weighing Osamu Sekita against Hiroko Tokita, I wasn't even feeling nostalgia. I was just watching Cross Game. From me, there is no higher praise.

Praising the ending isn't meant to belittle the rest. The journey has its charms too. In fact, it's a delight from start to finish, filled with laconic humor and terse emotional insights, with keenly drawn characters and a quiet appreciation for the everyday joys of ordinary life. The cast's rapport is good, particularly as regards Ko and Aoba, whose verbal sparring is all tart retorts and easy chemistry broken by the occasional glimpse of the emotional icebergs—the biggest and gnarliest being Wakaba—that lie beneath the smooth surface of their comfortable relationship. Never has the "bickering couple" been done better. We've grown to love and care for these characters, all of them, much the way they love and care for each other, and it's one of the series' great pleasures merely to spend time in their company.

And let's not forget the baseball. The summer tournament supplies baseball matches in great quantities, and even the inconsequential ones are quickly paced and spiked with little surprises. The important ones are downright engrossing. Its sports action may be overshadowed by its personal and emotional content, but Cross Game is still a show best watched with a baseball in hand.

At its heart, though, dominating all else, are Ko and Aoba. Contrary, dishonest, and forever haunted by the shadow of the girl they both loved and lost, they've long been the emotional backbone of the series, and the nature and fate of their relationship is the big open question going into the final episodes. The answer comes in the very last episode, as Aoba realizes during the final heat of the game that Ko's biggest lie is his claim that he's a liar. It seems a simple thing, but coupled with Ko's answer to a question asked by Aoba several episodes previous, it changes everything. Suddenly earlier events take on entirely new meanings. The shift in Akane's affections, for instance, or Ko telling Akaishi to stop handing everything over to him. The full import of her realization takes just a second to hit, but when it does it hits with all the force of their fifty episodes of shared experience. It isn't just a good or even an excellent scene; it's a great one. It makes rewatching what came before a virtue, and watching what follows an unparalleled pleasure. It is, in short, the opening round of the most satisfying final (half) episode in recent memory.

The feel-good cliché is that the journey is what's important. Let's be honest. That's a load of crap. Everyone knows the destination matters—a lot. A good ending can redeem a bad series and push a good one towards greatness. A bad ending nearly always ruins a series, even the best of them. Cross Game's ending is a good one. Very good.

The end of Cross Game is of course a baseball game. It's a fine game, the kind of dryly funny, unpredictable match that the series is known for. But that's hardly all it is. It's also a crossroads, a place where Cross Game's characters and ongoing relationships meet and take a turn towards their final destinations. Akane fights for her life and shifts ever so slightly the direction of her affections. Ko gives Akaishi a gentle push to be less selfless. Azuma picks up some of Akaishi's selflessness and moves further yet from his days as a baseball robot. Azuma's flighty older brother reaches the final punch-line of his running joke of a love life, Aoba's amorous cousin Mizuki makes a sort of peace with his own unrequited feelings, and even bratty one-time manager/idol Risa can be spotted taking another step towards full-blown baseball fandom. This isn't just some game; it's a slice of life, in the best, most profound sense of the term: broad, varied, and poignant.

In the meantime Akane's health begins to deteriorate, putting extra pressure on the team—particularly Akaishi—while Ko and Aoba must at last have a reckoning with their own feelings. Regardless of the outcome, it'll be a summer to remember.

The overall plot is a twist on the standard hero tale. Instead of the main protagonist being an upstanding heroic figure, it turns out he's pretty much a rotten individual. He's not out to be the hero for glory or to help others; he's strictly out to get more money and to protect his property (amongst which he groups Fizz, Kiss and Genmi). The motives for the rest of the characters are a bit unclear. Fizz is apparently with Shibas to redeem his soul and make him a better person. It really doesn't fit well because its quite obvious he isn't willing to change. The fact that she travels with him seems more like a plot device to try and create a certain amount of drama and a lot of comical situations. The major problem with this being a 2 episode OAV is of course a lot of the character background and setup is compressed allowing the show to move directly into the action. A longer OAV series could have gone a long way to explain why these characters are together and just where they are going.

The story itself is pretty self-contained, so there shouldn't be any worries over cliffhanger endings. Most of the action that takes place seems to be centered on humiliating Fizz, the only good soul of the bunch. It's almost as the creators decided that they really don't like nice people and wanted to create this to punish them. The villain in this series exists strictly to make Fizz realize that being owned by Shibas isn't such a bad thing after all. No real threat seems to exist to the characters because of the foreshadowed power of Shibas. The ending is no surprise and is really rather anti-climatic.

You almost certainly know the premise of Astarotte's Toy already, so let's cut to the chase: this is that show about the 10 year old princess from a fantasy realm that has to fellate human men (or animals!) in order to survive.

The first thing that needs to be said is, that despite riding on that premise, the show is extremely tame. In fact apart from opening on an extended, steam obscured scene of a bunch underage girls bathing there's not much in the way of sexy fanservice even. This is far more of a moe show than a hentai one, seemingly aiming for its fans to be fawning over the girls rather than masturbating over them. Which begs the first question: why have any sexual content or premise whatsoever? I'm constantly told by moe experts that the subgenre has nothing at all to do with sex, and in fact many of them act with repulsion at any hint or suggestion that it does.

That's not to say the satire is gone this episode – but rather than the commercialisation of anime being the target, a slightly more gentle – but no less funny – finger is pointed at the conventions and tropes of US superhero mythology. We all know about ‘with great power comes great responsibility’ and the ‘loneliness of the masked hero’ – and it's to the writers’ credit that Tiger & Bunny deals with them in a way that is both respectful and firmly tongue-in-cheek. It also manages to drop its gags beat-perfectly into an action sequence that not only dominates the show's running time, but looks just as polished as last week. In fact, it might even look better – certainly the CGI didn't seem as jarringly awkward as it did occasionally during episode one. Even at only a week into the new season, it's starting to look like Tiger & Bunny will take the crown.

What's your taste in humor? Slapstick? Snarky bickering? Satire? Do you like action? Big, Hollywood movie-style city smashing action? How about a dashing of feel-good schmaltz? Welcome to episode 2 of Tiger & Bunny, and all of the above in under 25 minutes.

Last week's premiere suggested something – that Tiger & Bunny was a smart show. The combination of action and satire is rare in anime these days, and it's even rarer when it works. That was probably the biggest concern after episode one; that sustaining that level of smart, fresh quality would be tricky. But with the satirical exposition and world-building out of the way the show has narrowed its focus to a smaller, more personal level. And that's not just with the plot, but with the humour too. Instead of big wide stabs at commercialism and Japanese pop culture (although they are there too) the gags mainly come at the expense of characters and relationships.

Examples? It's hard to know where to start, as this episode is crammed full of genuine laugh out loud moments. There's the opening shot of our hero moaning and looking ridiculous in a futuristic motorbike sidecar. There's the buddy-movie style banter between our odd-couple protagonists. And there's what is meant to be a poignant flashback scene that left me – quite intentionally – in fits of giggles.

…or it may not. Her grandmother tells her she has no obligation to the child of a daughter she disowned and immediately puts her into hard labor with little compensation. The other denizens of the hotel aren't much better: the first girl Ohana meets tells her to die, multiple times. Ohana's Cinderella fantasy is shattered and only left her sleeping on someone else's hearth. She decides she'll simply have to make the best of it, whether the other residents of the summer house like her or not.

The character animation in Hana-Saku Iroha is absolutely lovely. From Ohana's shiftless mother to her flustered childhood friend, every beaming face is brimming with emotion and subtlety, and this tenderness carries over into the breathtaking scenery as well. The endearing visuals lay the groundwork for what promises to be a story full of potential. Ohana has many relatives and friends at her grandmother's place, all of them unique and all of them somewhat cruel to her. At the same time, they're not unlikable people, and we get the feeling that Ohana, flawed and depressed as she is, will have a positive effect on them despite her indentured servitude. It's hard to describe what's so captivating about this first episode, but it already has a soft hand planted firmly over the viewers’ hearts.

The plot summary may not stand out initially, but give this one a chance, absolutely. By episode's end, it's clear that this is going somewhere memorable.

Ohana Matsumae has never had the kind of life she wished for, but then again, she's not the kind of person she wishes she was either. At only 16, she tells her good friend Koichi that she will get married in ten years, live in a small apartment, and inevitably do nothing of merit with her life. She hasn't had the greatest role model in her mother, who neglects her job as a writer to hook up with various men week by week while Ohana looks after the house. Eventually, her mother throws up her hands and moves out of their apartment with another man, sending Ohana away to live with her grandmother…just as Koichi confesses his love for Ohana and runs away crying. In short, it hasn't been a good day for her, but it hasn't been a good life in general.

Still, this may be a great opportunity! Ohana learns that her grandmother runs an inn near a hot spring getaway, and realizes her fairytale dreams may be coming true: escaping to a peaceful place with a kind old woman who gives her candy and treats her like a princess.

Steins;Gate is a series awash in hype and hubbub, and has been weeks since before the season began. Some have compared it to Higurashi, what with the gruesome deaths and ever-present cicadas. Some have pointed to its predecessor, Chaos;HEAd, as a source of influence. (Well, they share the dumb semicolon-in-title thing.) For my part, I saw a lot of heavy Serial Experiments Lain influence throughout it, particularly in the constant buzzing static that plays under every sound you hear in the show.

It's probably not a good sign that despite these favorable comparisons, I spent most of this first episode thinking about Battlefield Earth.

Steins;Gate seems to be under the false assumption that canted angles (off-kilter shots) look cool and mysterious. They do not. Flicking the camera over a few degrees has its place, but not all the time and for no reason. That's the only thing (I hope!) this series has in common with that terrible movie, but my mind wandered simply because Steins;Gate makes no effort to hold its audience's attention. It is almost insultingly obtuse and bland to look at.

The story supposedly revolves around the aspiring mad scientist Rintaro Okabe and his ragtag group of friends who are interested in developing a time machine but, much to their surprise, may have already created one. That's about as much setup as the first episode ever presents us with, spending the rest of its time on bizarre conversations that go nowhere, awkward scene changes from one gray, boring building to another, and goofy characters that act strangely because…whimsy! Intrigue! Why should we care?

Steins;Gate may have a complex story, unique characters, and an engrossing take on time-travel horror to offer. Heck, time-travel horror itself is a pretty terrific idea not yet explored enough. This first episode has just done a pretty poor job at trying to prove its merits. Is it worth a second episode? Sure. There may be a terrific mystery hiding here. Baccano! and Durarara!! are two excellent series known for having alienating beginnings. But Steins;Gate has already spun around three episodes worth of frustration trying to offer up a tablespoon of intrigue, so it will have to backpedal at warp speed to change that.

None of this really makes sense, but it doesn't really matter. Battle Girls – Time Paradox isn't important enough in the grand scheme of things to need to make sense. It's not a good show, and it's doubtful that it ever had plans to be a good show. If the creators had big artistic dreams for this property, they wouldn't have made it so clichéd and boring. One can only assume that they set out merely to make something that would take minimal effort and make maximal money. And hey, they succeeded. They went down the checklist of things that everyone is familiar with—dumb teenage girls, magical lands, boobs, quests, Japanese snack foods, talking dogs—and locked a bunch of writers in a room until they spit something out that wouldn't tread on anyone's copyrights.

The writing is so lazy that none of the characters’ actions or motivations follow any logical path. It doesn't make sense that someone from the mid 1500s would be nonchalant about seeing a flip phone with animations on it. It makes even less sense that a powerful general would task a strange little girl to go forth and find a magical item, knowing that the girl can't fend for herself, or find her way home. Then again, no one even bothered to ask the girl where she was from, and how she got to where she was, so none of the other questions matter.

Battle Girls – Time Paradox is what it is. It's an unimaginative cash milker with recycled ideas and recycled character designs that is inoffensive to watch, but certainly not worth anyone's time.

Every nook and cranny in Japan seems to be a magical space-time portal just waiting to open up and swallow up the nearest ditzy girl in the vicinity. Battle Girls – Time Paradox joins a long lineage of stories about girls who get transported to some mystical land of swords and ye olden architecture. And while it isn't particularly terrible, it certainly isn't good, and instead swims in the much more odious pool known as mediocrity.

The lead is an archetype that will be familiar to most seasoned anime veterans. Clueless and meatball-haired, Hideyoshi is a klutzy middle school student whose only passions in life are fashion and snacks. Hoping for an easy alternative to studying, she prays at a local shrine, only to fall into a bright light and be whisked away to an alternate reality Sengoku Era populated only by women. There she meets legendary Japanese generals… who are also all women, scantily clad in breast-gripping, midriff-baring outfits. For reasons unfathomable, they're not at all interested or shocked by Hideyoshi's cell phone, but they are interested in recruiting her help to find a suit of legendary armor.

Enter Aisaka Taiga. She's short, cute and nobody wants to mess with her. Ryuuji soon learns she isn't all attitude and spunk however, no matter what the rumors their classmates circulate say. A love-letter acts as a catalyst to expose her cute insecurities, and she fiercely wields a boken in order to deal with them. If Taiga's dramatic introduction didn't already cinch the obvious, the events that soon follow drive home the fact that Ryuuji has gotten himself involved with a girl destined to complicate things.

There's little to say about the standard 'boy meets girl and hijinks ensue' plot line but it feels like you're really taking this cliche premise on the chin when it's revealed they live next door to one another. Revealing that Taiga is in love with Kitamura and also happens to be close friends with Kushieda presents Taiga and Taksau with an obvious opportunity as they realize they're in love with the others' best friend. Dodgeball plots, failed attempts at baking and swirling rumors about the time they've begun spending together are just some of the beasts they battle. All the while Taiga prods Ryuuji on like a slave driver as she uses her ability to get Ryuuji closer to Kushieda against him. It's funny but also a little sad.

No one expects all manga to be thought-provoking masterpieces, but there's something to be said for a work that still manages to feel rather pointless. Toradora! achieves that with a claustrophobic focus on the lead characters and a plot that's shallow and cliche-ridden. In spite of all that, Toradora! still manages to be entertaining anyway, proving once again you don't need to have a deeper meaning to be fun.

Takasu Ryuuji is an average teenage guy, excluding this nagging problem of looking like a criminal thanks to his uncontrollably aggressive stares. It doesn't seem to bother him much though and he's got bigger things on his mind anyway, like an OCD-driven need to have things kept clean. The new school year has begun and he's lucky enough to be in the same class as his best friend, Kitamura, and the girl he has a crush on, Kushieda.

Most of the original Tenchi Muyo! English dub cast has returned, most importantly Kate T. Vogt as Washu and Jennifer Darling as Ayeka; they don't have the biggest parts but would be the hardest English VAs to replace since both so clearly-defined their roles. They've lost none of their quality over time, and the original did have one of the better mid-'90s dubs. Some issues could be raised with the script, which in typical FUNimation style is occasionally way off what's being said but does flow smoothly. Less acceptable are a couple of blatant errors, such as referring to Jupiter in the English dub when the subtitles and picture on the screen both obviously refer to Saturn, but it's still a solid effort overall.

The on-disc Extras all seem to have been taken from the original Japanese release, as they include Japanese TV trailers, a “behind the scenes” Japanese music video for the closing song, and a pair of 12-minute-long “Real Tenchi Tour” featurettes. The latter take the viewer to real-world locations that were used as the inspirations for on-Earth settings in the various Tenchi series. Also included is a reversible cover, English tracks in both 2.0 and 5.1, and FUNimation's standard practice of showing Japanese credits when the Japanese dub is on and English credits when the English dub is on, with the ability to switch between them using the Angle button.

Although episode 6 has some important revelations, volume 2 of the newest Tenchi Muyo! OAV series is unquestionably the weakest OVA volume to date in the franchise. It's still a must-see for Tenchi fans but the overall quality is seriously lacking.

Though the writing might slack here, the artistry maintains the same standards as always for Tenchi OVAs: good but not great foreground and background art, reasonably good animation, and constant character designs. Misao's design looks so disturbingly like Mihoshi that it can be unnerving watching him and hearing a male voice instead (but that's also the point), while other newer arrivals are typical Tenchi style. One thing Tenchi series have always done well are their unique spaceship designs, and that hasn't changed.

The background music is another let-down, as it doesn't do a particularly good job of supporting and enhancing the moods of the given scenes. The instrumental opening sounds somewhat like a remix of earlier Tenchi themes, while the upbeat closer is a nice but unexciting number reminiscent of early Oh My Goddess! theme songs.

But it's not just the main characters or a cast so broad it's forcing the story to stretch out too much. The attempts at comedy rarely click, the whole thing lacks energy, and the series does a much better job of setting up potential action scenes than executing them. In fact, the only battle that actually is shown in any significant detail in the first two episodes is Sasami's duel with Mashisu, where she proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that even cute, young, and seemingly completely inoffensive Jurain princesses are still people to be reckoned with. For long-term Tenchi fans that is arguably the single biggest highlight between episodes 4 and 5.

And then there's episode 6, which offers its own set of problems. The three Goddesses of the Tenchi Universe have been suggested before, but for the first time they appear together and get actively and directly involved. Exactly what all is going on here is confusing (where did this Counteractor come from, and what's the deal with the girl Tenchi saves?), and it doesn't help matters that the episodes starts in the middle and continues from there, giving the viewer the feeling that at least half an episode is missing. More than 14 months have passed since the first volume of the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki 3 OVA was released in the States, but by the end of episode 5 this one has proven to not be worth the wait. Although the magic that made the original Tenchi Muyo! OAVs so entertaining survived through the first three episodes of this follow-up series, it's almost completely gone by the time episode 4 rolls around. What's left is a bland, lifeless production lacking humor, spirit, enthusiasm, and sometimes any degree of sense.

Tenchi Muyo! was originally predicated on a mix of humor, sexiness, silliness, personality conflict, and action that turned it into the prototypical harem romantic comedy. Completely absent in this volume, though, is the Ayeka/Ryoko competitive dynamic that was always a driving force in the show, and the brief scenes where Washu and Seto play off each other aren't enough to compensate. So much time is spent focusing on Mashisu and Misao that Tenchi is actually only a minor secondary character through episodes 4 and 5 (although he returns to the starring role in episode 6), and other characters, particularly Ayeka, are well under-used. Considering how fun and involving the personalities of the core cast are, this is a major time management negative.

The pivotal scenes of Episodes 4 and 5, both near the end, show what the series is capable of in terms of emotional weight. Whether it's Suzuka sharing an umbrella in the rain, or Yamato thinking to himself about their relationship, there's definitely something there, and it's being handled subtly rather than melodramatically. After all, isn't that what love is really like? This is definitely a patient viewer's series, where it takes a few episodes to even reach a starting point for romance.

Unfortunately, comedic distractions get in the way, and the ratio often feels like 15 minutes of interminable silliness to every 5 minutes of sweetness. Secondary characters like Yamato's womanizing pal Hatori and the college girls at the bathhouse try to carry the humor, but their generic personalities don't cut it in a field where every joke about high-school romance has already been made. It's paradoxical, really: the side characters tried to be funny in the manga but were too annoying; now they're trying to be funny in the anime but are too boring. Maybe that's the real reason why Yamato and Suzuka's romance takes so long to develop—they keep getting interrupted by these unfunny goofballs.

Sadly these final episodes do not pass without another artistic breakdown. The problems the series saw back in episode 13 with a sudden drop-off in character rendering quality recur in the artistically subpar episode 23, making Honoka look positively anorexic, vaguely distorting other characters, and generally giving them a far rougher look than they should have. As before, rendering quality returns to normal for the next episode. The credits provide no breakdown for those who do the grunt work for each episode, but the difference is so readily noticeable that some form of outsourcing must be responsible. CG renderings and animation in the last episode do not impress quite as much as elsewhere in the series, either, but in other places the visual maintain the same sharp artistic standards (and capable animation standards) seen elsewhere in the series. The final episode also features some inventive artistic sequences that may remind some viewers of the last episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The soundtrack throughout the series has been rather eclectic, often significantly changing up its sound while still retaining a few core elements. In its final scenes it shifts to a decidedly symphonic approach reminiscent of certain classical music standards, which flows into a variation on its opening theme as the credits roll and visuals continue. Whether or not the musical selections are always the best choices vary from scene to scene. The same opener remains throughout, while the second closer continues through episode 23.

Carol Jacobanis, the voice of Paife, sometimes seems a bit stiff in her delivery (especially in episode 21), but otherwise the English dub provides a close match to the sound and style of the original performers throughout this span. Anna Morrow does an especially good job of pegging Honoka's emotional range, self-confidence, and various moods; hopefully we will be hearing much more from her in the future, as she is a vocal talent worth noting. The English script stays reasonably close to the original throughout.

All eight episodes on the two DVDs are basically self-contained and taken directly from chapters of the manga. Volume one contains plots featuring a serial liar, an occult game gone very wrong, and an afternoon quest for a real fortuneteller. Volume two begins on a lighter note with a talking fox and his oden (fish cake) cart. In the subsequent three episodes, Yuko helps a housewife kick her Internet addiction, stands idly by while a young graduate student orchestrates her own destruction, and sends Watanuki off at the behest of the Ame-Warashi to come to the aid of a magnificent hydrangea bush.

Nothing else about this anime takes things to the next level, either. Production I.G's adaptation of the manga's superior styling is solid but not exceptional. The animation and Japanese voice talent quality is likewise solid for a TV series but not exceptional. The soundtrack, particularly the insipid opening and ending themes, is outright disappointing, especially when compared to older CLAMP-based anime, which were virtually operatic in scope (not to mention superior in other respects as well). Perhaps the creators were hoping that viewers would be too distracted by all the talking heads lecturing on about wishes and free will to notice.

This psuedo-philosophical maundering while lounging about in colorful kimono might do it for some people, but it has always left me cold. Indeed, what fast becomes truly distasteful about this series (both anime and manga versions) is the way in which it consistently advances such a militantly conservative libertarian view of the world. In this iteration of CLAMP-land, everyone chooses one's own destiny, and if you suffer from misfortune, it must be your own fault. Oprah and the rest of the self-help industry would be proud. How far CLAMP has come from those early days of Tokyo Babylon, where the dehumanizing effects of the modern urban social setting were to blame! Talk about taking out the disillusionment accompanying middle age on the fans. Liberals have been fairly warned—your thoughts won't be much provoked by xxxHOLiC, but you might be. Still, if you turn off the brain cells (and if you've read the manga, forget what you know), there are far worse places to look for a bit of animated entertainment.

As if in response to complaints about the dullness of the first volume's contents, the second volume livens things up quite a bit by picking stories from across the original manga's run which introduce three new characters, feature cameos by a horde of supporting character standbys, and, perhaps most importantly, expand Belldandy's emotional range. One of her most adorable or annoying (take your pick) traits so far has been her utter faith in Keiichi and seeming incapability to feel threatened when other women make advances on him, but Shiho's arrival and attention in episode 6 changes that. Given her infallibly sweet nature, Belldandy understandably has a difficult time dealing with this new emotion, and as we quickly discover, a goddess with bottled-up emotions can have hazardous side effects. Something like this was hinted at in the Ah! My Goddess Movie, but this is the first time it appears in series animation. For those getting their first exposure to the franchise via the TV series, it should help make her feel a bit more human despite the power output. It also may explain how she ends up so uncharacteristically plagued with doubt in the next two episodes.

Although sweetness and congeniality are the bread and butter of AMG, the series is usually most interesting when things get chaotic, and the arrival of Peorth in episode 7 certainly achieves that. Gone are the French affectations she tosses about in the manga (neither dub even makes an effort) or the sensible administrator side she shows in the movie; here she is in total full-of-herself bitch mode, alternately browbeating Belldandy in their one-sided conflict, trying to seduce Keiichi to fill his deepest wish (read: repressed sexual desires), putting down Urd and Skuld, or engaging in childish challenges with the other two goddesses. Since Urd spends most of this volume acting like the wise and observant big sister, Peorth's sexuality seems to have been played up to fill the vampiness vacuum left behind.

That can also be seen in the character designs. Although her look and outfit is 100% faithful to the design in the manga, Peorth's look is also every bit as sexy as Urd's at her sleaziest. Nearly all of the abnormally high level of fan service in this volume involves her. All other character designs are well-rendered, with good-looking but not garish outfits and new designs consistent in style with established ones; Satoko in particular looks charmingly pretty in an understated way. Quality background art also contributes to an overall pleasing look, but the rough animation quality continues to detract. It is the series' biggest weakness.

The soundtrack, which has normally been a strength for the TV series, falters in key action sequences as it descends into weak synthesizer-based numbers which resemble video game background music. In more gushy and light-hearted moments the woodwind-based ditties continue to work, but the dramatic quality drop-off in at least two places creates an uneven sound for the volume as a whole. The delightful bagpipe-influenced opener and country-leaning closer remain unchanged.

In an interesting bit of dub track gimmickry, NYAV Post has brought back Juliet Cesario – the English voice of Belldandy for the original anime (OVA) series – to voice the part of Peorth. (And to make it even more of an event, the Audio Commentary for episode 7 features both her and Eileen Stevens, the current voice of Belldandy, talking about their respective experiences with the role.) Her performance sounds nothing like her original work as Belldandy, instead taking on a bitchy quality which suits Peorth's original Japanese treatment well. All of the other new roles also find excellent matches for the original performances, while the returning cast maintains their tradition of performances that don't necessarily match the originals but certainly match the roles. The English script stays tight, only varying greatly in a couple of places. One nice touch certainly appropriate for American viewers: translating the name of Skuld's chain saw as “Texas Murder.”

While nothing to rave about, the soundtrack supports the actual Anime in a very decent manner. It is alternatively lively, funny, somber and romantic as required by the Anime.

Buttobi!! CPU is much better animated than the average Hentai. Excessive panning and looping, which are serious problems in most Hentai, are not used in any excessive manner here. The level of art and animation in this Anime is on par with an average OVA. The character designs are nice, and all the main characters have their own distinct look and personality.

Buttobi!! CPU is funny, the various situations that Akira finds himself in with Mimi can be hilarious, and no particular gag is overused. Most of the comedy centers around Akira's shyness at being required to perform certain… acts in order to provide Mimi with the necessary "active modules" she needs to perform at full capacity.

The regular episodes have nothing that could be called an ongoing plot, as they mostly just amount to the main characters traveling around, picking up and losing traveling companions, having adventures or getting stuck in ridiculous situations, and encountering a broad array of colorful characters who either help them, employ them, combat them, or (in Aisha's case) try to seduce them. If there is a recurring theme, it involves the forging and testing of the bond of sisterhood between Aisha and Rin Rin, a theme which also gets touched upon heavily in the OVA episode. Karin/Sou Sou's ongoing attempt to get Kan'u in her bed borders between being another running gag and a plot thread of its own. The OVA episode's story is an entirely self-contained transplantation of the cast into a modern-day school setting for typical competitive and fan service hijinks.

Dogakobo a support-focused animation studio whose only other significant lead efforts are the recently-released 11eyes and the unlicensed Myself ; Yourself, here produces a bright and colorful effort which is hardly a paragon of action animation but loads itself up so effectively on the cute factor that the lackluster animation may not matter. Each girl gets her own distinctive look (albeit typically one that can commonly be found in fan service-focused series) and one of three builds: ultra-petite elementary school, modestly petite middle school, or tall and voluptuous. Most of the female cast members appear in partly-defined nudity (upper=yes, lower=no) at some point – and yes, that includes the younger-looking members, for those sensitive to such things. A couple of the handful of male characters also get distinctive looks, but the same trio of designs for bandits – one short and sharp-nosed, one medium-height and thin, a third who's tall rather chubby – recycles so frequently that it seems to be another running joke. The visual effect may actually be at its best in the frequent SD scenes, which marks the series at its most irrepressibly cute level. Background art is typically solid but unremarkable.

The anime version of Koihime†Musō (not to be confused with the hentai OVA Koihime) is derived from a similarly-named 2007 PC adult visual novel/strategy game, which was later ported to the PS2 platform in a cleaned-up version. The game was itself derived from the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, so most of the character names and faction affiliations featured in the anime version are loosely based on characters and factions present in that novel. The events of all episodes except the included OVA are also set in the period of Chinese history covered by the novel, specifically the period around the late 2nd century A.D. where independent power blocks were growing as the Han dynasty crumbled but had not yet collapsed, although the series hardly makes any effort to be historically accurate; anachronisms, like idol singers, maid costumes, and modern women's undergarments, abound.

Of course, being historically accurate here is entirely beside the point. While these thirteen episodes do have distinct action components and achieve occasional moments of true sentiment, they are primarily just an exercise in pure otakucentric fare, one which replaces traditionally male characters with sexy and/or moe girls and runs them through a gauntlet composed mainly of comical adventures and fan service situations. Cuteness dominates here, complete with elaborate, colorful costumes and hairdos and plentiful SD scenes, and regular doses of nudity (uncensored here, unlike in the earlier Crunchyroll streams), breast size references, lingerie, and implied or outright lesbianism spice up the fun. This is a series where an attempt to find and/or create a new hot spring can take up an entire episode, another episode focuses on an eating contest and an encounter with a girl training to be a competitive eater, another character occasionally rides into battle or mischief on a pig, and yet another tries to pass herself off as a costumed hero called Butterfly Mask (because, naturally, she wears a butterfly-themed mask).

While other characters come and go, including standards like the arrogant rich girl, the cool and confident lesbian authority figure, the motherly figure (who, in this case, actually is a mother), the hard-drinking girl, the quiet warrior who's secretly an animal freak, the twin idol singer wannabes, the announcer girl, and the rebellious princess type, the focus remains on the central duo of Aisha/Kan'u and her adopted sister Rin Rin/Chōhi. The latter fills the role of the plucky, rambunctious kid who wears her heart on her sleeve (or, in this case, her remarkably expressive tiger-shaped hair clip), while the former is the kind-hearted, stalwart warrior who easily gets flustered by romantic advances from both men and women. Aisha is also something of the straight woman in the series, as most of the series' running jokes – including her being mistakenly regarded as the mother of some of the younger characters and the way her actual appearance doesn't seem to live up to her reputation – involve her. Other commonly recurring characters include Shuri/Komei as the shy herbalist and master strategist, quietly competitive Sei/Chōun, and thick-headed but boisterous and good-natured Sui/Bachō. While this lot may lack any degree of originality, they make up for it with the light-hearted and entertaining way that they interact. Between that and all of the situational gags, the series rarely has a dull moment.

The synthesizer-heavy musical score mixes some traditional Chinese themes in with cutesy themes, an occasional mildly dramatic one, and themes which sound like they were directly borrowed from an ero game for an overall effect that is energetic but unimpressive. The same could be said of opener “Flower of Bravery,” which captures the enthusiastic spirit of the show but is bland enough that it does not distinguish itself from the crowd. Closer “Yappari wa Sekai Atashi Legend” which complements a hyped-up beat and highly enthusiastic singing with an SD parade, works much better. Japanese vocal performances conform to the expected mix of cutesy interpretations.

Sentai Filmworks opted not to dub this one and includes only clean opener and closer for Extras, though they did also include the associated OVA episode. Although all of the content presented in this release is uncensored, some controversy has arisen over whether or not this is truly the most uncensored version of the series, as scene from episodes 9 and 10 both use SD artwork in places where the Japanese DVD releases apparently used regular artwork and more involved nude scenes; for instance, the breast competition between Rin Rin and Shouren happens entirely off camera in this release but was fully detailed in the Japanese release. Controversy has also erupted over the release due to Sentai apparently using the error-riddled subtitles from the original Crunchyroll stream of the series. Regardless of whether the subtitles were borrowed or created in-house – and the lack of any mention of a Subtitle Editor in the English credits suggests the former – they represent one of the worst examples of basic text editing to date on an anime DVD release, as nearly every episode has multiple instances of basic grammar mistakes, stuff that should have been caught on even a casual editing pass.

For all that the style may scream “shojo,” though, the content heads in a radically darker and different direction than any normal cutesy relationship-oriented shojo fare. The closest structural comparison to its “you died but are now back alive and must fight when called to remain that way” premise and occasional intense graphic violence is Gantz, but Red Garden replaces the crassness and video game feel of Gantz with decided horror and mystery elements. Although the “why” and “what” of the girls' predicament gets partly answered in this volume, the “how” is not addressed at all, nor are any solid hints provided about the ultimate purpose of the mysterious brother-sister funeral directors or the oddly-transformed men. Also still left in question at the end of the first four episodes is the nature and extent of the superhuman abilities the girls appear to have gained, which play only a minor role in the events of this volume but seem likely to become a bigger factor later on. But this is a 22-episode series, so not everything is going to be answered up front.

The girls who comprise the core cast represent a standard cross-section of common school roles and personality archetypes, although Kate's combination of the preppy insider with the quiet, reserved girl is a little unusual. The bitchy role instead falls to the vacuous party girl Rachel, who also, somewhat surprisingly, gets more radically affected by the circumstances than the more predictable responses of the other girls. The first four episodes devote a lot of effort to showing how the circumstances impact the school and personal lives and relationships of the girls, and do set up some potentially interesting issues on that front, but ultimately the content is at its strongest and most effective in full-blown Horror Mode. Several factors contribute to this – the creepy mood, the disturbing ugliness of the flashback to what really happened that forgotten night, the undefended violence – but the sheer panic in the reactions of the girls, and their sense of helplessness over their situation, makes the horror element work. A lot of the credit goes to Gonzo's apparent decision to allow the voice actresses, rather than the visuals, to carry the weight of the reactions. (Think about it: how many times have you seen anime titles where a character's expression and trembling, moreso than vocalizations, shows fear?)

And that explains maybe 40% of what's going on. Seriously, this is like a headache-inducing mashup of everything that's helped make anime popular—butt-kicking babes, elite academic institutions, buckets of blood, insane hand-to-hand combat, giant robot warfare, important-looking people standing in glowing computer rooms—without any regard for the logic behind it. Making matters worse are intermittent flashbacks that only serve to scramble the information. The series' saving grace is solid production values, as evidenced by the flashy fight scenes and plenty of detail in the tech-pocalyptic backgrounds. But whether the impossibly busty female characters and Random Acts of Panty can also be considered "solid production values" is a more delicate matter of taste. It doesn't take a master anime expert, though, to tell that this show simply has too much junk in it.

Beelzebub sounds like a great name for a metal band, the kind that tries to make up for its technical shortcomings by being as loud and fast as possible. The same could be said of this show, where the characters seem to be constantly yelling and being subjected to exaggerated acts of violence (or at least running from them). The story begins with Tatsumi Oga, a delinquent who is hated by the other troublemakers at his school—and weirds them out even more when he shows up one day with a baby in tow. As he explains to his best friend, Oga found the baby floating down the river (a covenient excuse that requires no further backstory!) and took it into his care. However, Oga's adventures in babysitting take an abrupt left turn when an imperious woman bursts in and tells him that the baby is the spawn of the Demon Lord and must now be raised to destroy all humanity. Well, that would certainly explain why he crackles with lightning and causes minor calamities everytime he cries.

This is one of those comedies where the premise itself is a lot funnier than the actual execution, which relies too much on repeating the same lowbrow jokes: Oga is a real tough guy!!!!! But he's trying to raise a baby. Ha ha, contradiction! Also the baby shoots lightning when it gets upset! It's like one of those Vince Vaughn goofball movies combined with supernatural-fantasy theatrics. The visuals are dialed down accordingly to meet these middling standards: Oga and company look fairly detailed with their sneering facial features and intense yanki poses, but the action itself lacks finesse, resorting to still-frame pans, looping animation patterns, and occasional cheap special effects. But they're yelling a lot and people are fighting and there's falling electric pylons so who cares!

If low-budget cheeseball humor suits your tastes, then by all means, enjoy this series as much as possible. Just don't expect subtlety and substance in a show where the title character has his privates hanging out.

I said it when I reviewed the Gosick light novel, and I'll say it again: it's hard to go wrong with a loli tsundere detective girl. Studio BONES seems to agree, staying true to the original as they adapt the period mystery series into one of the few decent offerings this barren winter season.

The story begins in an alternate early-20th-century Europe, where the decidedly foreign Kazuya Kujo attends a prestigious school in the pretty-sure-it-wasn't-in-Hetalia nation of Saubure. One day, a chance encounter brings Kujo face-to-face with another outsider: Victorique, a doll-like blonde who spends all day in the botanical garden at the top of the school library because she's too smart and too bored to hang out with the plebes. Instead, Victorique's daily brain exercises come from Grevil, a daffy police inspector who comes to her with cases that she solves on the spot while he takes the credit. However, the latest whodunit leads Victorique and Kujo to accept a ominous invitation aboard a cruise ship... and that's where the fun really starts. Unfortunately, that's also where the episode ends.

Much as I hate saying it, Gosick does get better later on—well-developed mysteries are not the kind that achieve greatness in a single episode. But the opener does enough things right to keep viewers interested: the setting carries much of the visual appeal, with rich details and pastel tones that make up the rolling countryside, the quaint city streets, and the gorgeously decorated garden where Kazuya and Victorique meet for the first time. (Too bad they won't be seeing that place again for a long while.) The characters, despite being fairly typical archetypes, have their charm points too: Victorique with her eccentric rolling around on the floor, the inspector with his self-assured dandyism. Elegant pretend-classical music in the background adds the final touch in evoking the right time and place, and if the script works out as planned, our loli tsundere detective girl and her Japanese friend should have one hell of an adventure on that boat. Trust me on this. I've read the book.

A kindly yet resourceful man abandons the war he was supposed to be fighting to take refuge in the snowy mountain wilderness with only his loyal German Shepherd and his trusty rifle by his side? Sounds like Jack London. Where he then discovers a long-lost yet noble race of bird men on the brink of extinction? Okay, not Jack London. H.G. Wells, maybe? Not quite, but there is nonetheless something deliciously nostalgic about Song of the Hanging Sky. The way in which it draws upon the themes and plot points of vintage science fiction and wilderness adventure literature surely helps. Yet who would have guessed that this luminous manga was first published in Japan in 2007 by newcomer mangaka Toriko Gin? Certainly not this reviewer. Heads up everybody: We have an instant classic on our hands. This is one of the best new titles to be published in English for 2008.

So what makes this humble manga so great? Well, everything. The storyline is both beautifully constructed and instantly captivating. Even the prose is attractive, grave but not melodramatic. (The occasional grammatical error does not unduly distract.) It begins modestly, with Jack writing affectionate letters to someone named Natalie. The quiet activities do not last long, though; while foraging amidst the snowdrifts, he finds a boy collapsed in the snow. The boy is not human; he has majestic wings and feathers for hair. Jack nurses him back to health, and the two, despite being unable to communicate, form a cautious bond.

This bond persists even after bird boy returns to his tribe, and the shaman River reveals, to everyone's horror, that the boy's soul name has been changed to the human word, “Hello.” At first, the adults are determined to exterminate this threat to their security, but Hello is able to convince them to stop. And in the end, they decide that Jack might be worth more to them alive than dead, and he is allowed to become a part of the proverbial family. However, Jack is only beginning to learn about the tragic history of this noble people, and as a humanity at war hems them in on all sides and “The Day of Destruction” approaches, by the end of volume one it becomes increasingly uncertain that there is anything anyone can do.

Best of all, the story is delivered accompanied by exquisite artwork. Indeed, do not judge this book by its cover; the cover illustration, while charming does not the least bit of justice to the craftsmanship inside. Gin draws in the sort of impressionistic shoujo style that largely went out of style at least a decade go but remains fiercely beloved by fans of the genre, and she combines that with the soft-edged, cartoon features of childhood trademarked by Hayao Miyazaki. (Clearly, there is also something of Miyazaki's thematic style here as well. Think Princess Mononoke.) Of course, the bird men—both male and female—are all inhumanly beautiful in their faux Native American garb…but they have the obvious excuse.

In her afterward to the first volume, Gin admits to wallowing in her manga masterpiece collection and dreaming about being included among the many greats anthologized. Well, if the first volume of Song of the Hanging Sky is any indication, it is not an idle fantasy. She is already batting on their level, and if she can keep this creative momentum up, her future as one of manga's 21st century luminaries is already assured. You will not believe that this is her first continuing series.

Welcome to the NHK could have easily been called "Even Bad People Deserve to Be Happy." Perhaps NHK's misfits aren't exactly bad, but unlike the folks in most comedy/dramas with romance (the term "romantic comedy" and its associated baggage don't exactly apply to NHK), they certainly aren't good. They're damaged goods, the castaways of life, battered and bloodied by its tempestuous waters and shipwrecked on its shores. They're scarred, twisted, otakufied, isolated and medicated. Whether employed or unemployed, "normal" or shut-in, they're life's losers, and my do their lives make for oddly compelling watching. And even when (or perhaps because) they're selfish, mean, self-destructive and downright creepy it's hard not to cheer them on.

The heart of this volume lies in Sato's attempts to find solace in fellow castaways of the fairer sex. Sometimes the show milks his quest for discomfiting humor—we are made excruciatingly aware of the true purpose of the "off" party well before it ever dawns on poor Sato—and at other times uses it for surprisingly pure romance, as in Sato and Misaki's awkward and deceptively simple relationship. Sato's ongoing battle with his own worst instincts takes on a surprisingly potent edge when he makes an understandable but disastrously wrong-headed decision regarding Misaki, and his trip with Hitomi is a pitch-perfect example of why it's a terrible idea to let emotional retards lick each other's wounds.

But as always, the real show is in the damaged psyches of the characters themselves. A flashback to childhood explains Yamazaki's obsession with two-dimensional women, Hitomi visits suspicious websites and talks about how her boyfriend Sato(!) beats her, and Sato grows more paranoid and delusional with each relationship he forms. We get treated to Yamazaki's theory that romantic love is an invention of western capitalists ("traditionally Japan only had arranged marriages and late-night trysts") and a novel yet painfully realistic method for coping with the anguish of romantic betrayal (hint: it involves masks and misogyny, and it's not what you're thinking). Sato's realization of his own blooming affection is hilariously belated, his reaction typically unhinged, and Misaki's motivations only become more obscure the more Sato learns about her, with tantalizing little hints all along that perhaps she's even more twisted than he.

Initially the chips seem completely stacked against her as her girlfriends and Rene show her just how precious life is to those who have lost loved ones, but as the safety net falls away with the Jinx becoming less effective and more destructive, it becomes harder to empathize with those who continue to cling to the only thing they have left (their life) while they stand amid the ruins of their village and easier to side with the orphan who watched her parents die and still believes that the cost is too great. Still, such a poignant question is what brings a lot of life to the characters who decide to debate it (including Rayne and Erenfried, though from their perspective it's less about life vs. safety and more about right vs. wrong), and it's a big reason why some of the secondary characters feel more alive than the main characters who have actual histories attached to their names.

The stunning animation and beautiful character designs make it really hard to stay annoyed at the show's one flaw though. A lot of series stutter after the first few episodes as the animation and art drop in quality, but Neo Angelique ~Abyss~ does not suffer from this in the least. While a few of the outfits that characters wear are so outlandish that they easily fall into the realm of ugly and the Thanatos could definitely do with a few more skins so that they're not always fighting the same five designs, the quality of the background art and animation remains consistently crisp and stunning. Those who are easily distracted and entertained by pretty things will quickly feel like a cat trapped in a room full of catnip-stuffed mice, and the cover price of these two DVDs is almost worth it based on animation quality alone.

The big problem with the four main guys is that there isn't any spice to flavor the dish presented. We know why they are the way they are, yet we rarely get a chance to understand what motivates them. Why do they fight the Thanatos? Why do they devote themselves to a stranger? What are their feelings about the people they protect? Plenty of time is spent inside Angelique's head to understand her, yet she's so busy discovering herself and trying to preserve the fragile little family she's surrounded herself with that she never asks the tough questions and the boat is never rocked between the five main characters.

Thankfully, secondary characters like Rene and Angelique's two girl pals Hannah and Sally are more than happy to toss a little conflict into her sheltered life. The big question that looms throughout the episodes on the second disk is one that every viewer will be familiar with: life versus safety. The Jinx are, at first, capable of protecting the lives of the average citizen, but at the cost of their homes, possessions, and livelihood. But for people who have lost loved ones to the Thanatos attack, these are small prices to pay. For Angelique, however, no one should have to sacrifice so much just to stay alive and feel “safe.”

It takes some time for some of the main characters to shake off their personality stereotypes and develop as characters. Angelique may seem cowardly and a bit boring at first, but her honest wish to help people and passionate desire to protect her new family, coupled with just enough naiveté to keep the series from deteriorating into her sitting around pondering her true feelings for the hotties surrounding her, make her a very likable character.

Rayne and J.D. are the most dynamic when they're facing off against their rivals, Erenfried and Jet. Considering that the only other adversaries our heroes fight against are the random Thanatos that pop up, it's good to see some real conflict with characters that won't just go away when Angelique purifies them. Plus, it's only after they've tussled with their foils that we get to peek inside their heads and learn more about them. Nyx, even with his history still masked aside from a few hints about his true age, develops through his numerous interactions with Angelique and his ability to motivate her. Hyuga is the only character of the four who never develops into anything beyond his blind devotion to Angelique, and even secondary characters like Bernard and Rene are far more interesting and engaging than “the quiet spearman.”

It's hard to take an anime series (or anything, for that matter) seriously when it's based on a video game, especially considering that the vast majority of them are lackluster at best. To be sure, Neo Angelique ~Abyss~ definitely suffers from the “initiating a random monster encounter” feeling that adventure games love to make you level your team through, but interestingly enough, the video games the series is based on are more famous for the dating sim aspect of the games, an angle that (aside from the copious amount of pretty boys) is rarely touched upon in the anime. Toss in characters that are more than just the sum of their personalities, morally ambiguous questions about the price of safety, and some of the most beautiful designs and animation that's come out of Japan, and you'll understand why Neo Angelique ~Abyss~ manages to brush off the game-to-series curse that so few can escape.

Angelique, the heroine and only regular female character in the series, is hardly your average 16-year-old. Having lost her parents in a Thanatos attack at a young age, the orphan is now going to school to become a doctor in order to carry on her parents' legacy and help those who are hurt by the Thanatos. A good student who has otherwise lived a secluded life at an all-female private school, Angelique first attracts the attention of a wealthy gentleman named Nyx when it gets out that she can heal the sick simply by holding their hand. Believing she may be the Queen's Egg (as there hasn't been a female Purifier in a very long time), Nyx approaches her and asks her to join him and fellow Purifier Rayne in order to battle the Thanatos. Angelique turns him down at first, but after realizing that she can help people as a Purifier just as much as she can a doctor, accepts the invitation. They soon pick up two more Purifiers, J.D. and Hyuga, and form a group that the Arcadian media dubs the Orb Hunters.

The subtler aspects of the series are not limited to Yoko, either. For all its seeming shallowness, TTGL often gives the impression that there is a bit more to it all than all its surface bluster. That , unfortunately, does not prevent the early part of the series from indulging in tired retread scenes like the “must find a way to peek over the wall at the naked ladies in the hot springs” sequence in episode 6, or occasionally descending into other equally dead story gimmicks, but a viewer can get the sense that the series will eventually achieve something more. The dramatic shift in tone that results from a stunning (but also thoroughly telegraphed) development at the end of episode 8 may mark that turning point, but as the volume ends that remains to be seen.

The Gunmen also distinguish themselves from other modern mecha with cartoonish designs that sometimes seem like throwbacks to the '70s kids shows like the Time Bokan family of titles. Even more modern-looking ones, like the head-shaped miniature Lagann with its brain-patterned protective shield, have a fresh look to them. Beastmen designs, by comparison, range from convincing hybrid forms to the positively silly. Although the primary color scheme is vivid and appealingly colorful, Gainax often uses variations in the color scheme to reflect mood and environment, especially in the underground scenes and, to a lesser extent, in episode 9. Respectable background art is also a regular feature. The animation is better than most of Gainax's other productions, although the styling of the way characters and mecha move (especially in the involved fight scenes) may not work for everyone.

For all of its great and exciting look, and for all of its normal production quality, TTGL does, unfortunately, suffer from quality control issues. This is most painfully obvious in episode 9, where character designs lose their sharpness, Yoko becomes less busty, and in general everything takes on a rougher edge. (The degradation is, in fact, very similar to artistic breakdowns that happen in two episodes of The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye.) Lesser problems can be seen in episode 4 and other individual spots throughout the series, and some design elements are not consistently maintained; the size and coverage of Yoko's halter top varies a bit from scene to scene and angle to angle, for instance. The problems here are doubtless connected to the vast array of different key artistic personnel who worked on the series, as the episode director, storyboarder, and animation director all vary from episode to episode, with many responsible for only a single episode.

And this being a Gainax series, it does, of course, have loads of fan service. As previously mentioned, Yoko is inherent fan service, but even beyond that she gets the occasional opportunity to flash even more skin and the camera seems obsessed with using angles that emphasize her sexuality.

A trio of sisters pops up on multiple occasions to flash their curves, but the “hot springs” episode takes fan service to absurd levels, such as characters moved along by lines of bouncing breasts and male characters employing amusing methods to cover their manhood. (One deliciously ironic scene shows Yoko complaining about the male characters cavorting with Playboy bunny-clad girls while she stands with her ample chest stuck out.) Let's not forget the occasional phallic symbolism in that and other places, either.

Another kind of fan service comes in the cameos present in the “hot springs” episode, as Gainax borrows designs from across the spectrum of its previous series to stock its Playboy bunnies, albeit often making them look much bustier than in their original form; look carefully for representatives of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mahoromatic, and both Gunbuster series, among others, and keep a careful eye out for one “queen” bunny.

Instead of using the dub cast ADV had already selected, Bandai handed the series over to Bang Zoom! for a complete recasting, which means the ADV dub for the first few episodes (if ever made) may one day be regarded as one of those obscure anime oddities. Dub fans will have to wait for either the Sci Fi Channel broadcast or early 2009's dual language releases to hear it, however, as only the subtitles are present here. Again, one has to wonder if this will ultimately prove the best option, as ADV's dubs have traditionally been at their best when dealing with boisterous, over-the-top content like this, but only time will tell on that. The Japanese cast certainly turns in some fine work here, especially Katsuyuki Konishi in the defining role of Kamina. Pickier viewers may take some issue with how the subtitle text handles thing, especially the Spiral King's name.

Although Bandai has put two disks totaling nine episodes in this release for a regular anime volume retail price, they have gone quite shy on the Extras. Both disks contain only the first clean opener and closer, but the fact both disks have them suggests that Bandai is just going to slap the dub onto each disk and release them separately come next year.

The original Japanese opening and closing credits are retained for each episode, with cumulative English credits only at the end of each disk. A Special Edition version also includes a CD. Bandai's decision to release the subtitled-only episodes exactly one-third at a time may also be called into question here, as the end of episode 8 seems like a much more natural disk break point than the end of episode 9.

Despite some flaws, TTGL succeeds wonderfully in its first third precisely because it seems to know exactly what it wants to aim for and hits a bull's-eye in execution. It looks like it may take a more serious turn in its second third, but it definitely gets off to a slammin', fun-lovin' start.

It must be said up front that Highlander looks good. Really good. Gorgeous in fact. Veteran theatrical director Yoshiaki Kawajiri knows how to use a theatrical budget to greatest effect, making for something that looks like it belongs on the biggest screen possible. Set largely in a post-apocalyptic future littered with the opulent, decaying remains of a dead civilization, it's an undeniable feast for the eyes. Colin's initial resurrection, set in an imposing stonehenge-esqe monument amidst a time-lapse blur of days and moonlit nights that ends in a sun-bathed field of windblown dandelion seeds, is a rare sequence of surpassing beauty that lingers in the mind's eye long after it is over. Naturally, having helped to promote anime's stateside reputation in the 80s and 90s for sex and violence with titles like Ninja Scroll and Wicked City, Kawajiri fills Highlander with—you guessed it—sex and violence. And he's a seasoned pro at both. There's plenty of frank sexuality and one sweaty sex scene, and his staging of sword battles is among the best in the business. The battles are thrilling little pieces that hit the right balance of outrageousness and realism, know when to pause for maximum limb-chopping coolness, but are swift enough that they never drag on or seem needlessly drawn out.

Naturally, dialogue isn't the only problem. You can't take a step without busting your ankle in a plot-hole or blundering into a poorly thought-out idea. Colin at one point is told that he should stop chasing vengeance and enjoy immortal life with the ever-reincarnating love of his life, without a single thought for the realities of the situation. He'll have to watch his love die again and again. And what about finding her every time she reincarnates (ask the kids in Fantastic Children about how easy that is)? If he finds her too late, will he have "relations" with an old granny? And if he finds her too early— ...um, strike that line of thought. Character interactions are insultingly simplistic, their personalities stereotypes, their development forced and unconvincing. The relationship between Colin and Dahlia is a wonder of narrative convenience, with no effort made to maintain plausibility. Some of the conflicts are so embarrassingly overwrought that even the estimable talents of Kawajiri are no match for their silliness. No amount of technical prowess can keep Allied freedom fighter Colin and evil Nazi Marcus confronting each other on the wing of a falling plane from feeling like something straight out of a fourth-rate continental James Bond rip-off. The script even botches the pacing. Kawajiri can begin and end them with eye-popping transitions, but he can't keep the endless series of flashbacks from constantly murdering whatever narrative momentum the movie has managed to build in the meantime. Even at a bare 85 minutes, the film feels attenuated.

Big Windup!
DVD - Season 1 Part 2
I can't help but love Big Windup!. It's the most compelling sports anime since Hajime no Ippo, combining an extreme underdog with a team of lesser underdogs; a nail-biting sports serial that can grab hold of even someone with no interest in sports and make their stomach churn in anticipation of an at-bat, a pitch, or a run. Its animation, despite occasional slips in quality, maintains a high standard for the most part. The music, though nothing special, made me smile with not-so-subtle references to Chariots of Fire and other well-known sports soundtracks. And yet, this volume was unquestionably frustrating to watch, for it has fallen quite far. The glacial pacing drags down the entire production, and the strain of the writers and storyboard artists to try to keep the momentum going is all too evident in these episodes.

DVD - Season 1 Part 2
After the game FINALLY draws to a close, we only have one canon episode left in the series: the aftermath. Mihashi, feverish from exhaustion, recuperates at home, all the while marinating in guilt for allowing Tōsei to rack up points. A few friends from the team, including Abe and Tajima, stop by for lunch. It's an important and at times funny episode: Abe begins to realize just how abusive he's being to the poor kid, while simultaneously wanting to punch him more for being such a simpering loser. It's a relief to have such quality time after such a long stretch, and it's easily one of the best episodes in the series. For a final episode we're treated to a side story based on the pilot episode of the manga, wherein Abe's middle school nemesis Haruna has to talk some sense into a teammate who's feeling he's reached his personal limits and should quit the team.

And that's where it ends, merely one game into the 12 game tournament that comprises a Japanese high school baseball season. The magazine that serializes Big Windup!, AFTERNOON, is a monthly anthology, so new chapters come out pretty slowly. By the time the anime was made in 2007, there was only enough story for a single season of animation (and even that's a stretch); even today there's probably not yet enough for a second. I won't pretend it's not a frustrating place to leave off, but given a choice I'd take years of waiting for manga and maybe a second season over countless mindless filler episodes any day.

Although the dub is mostly excellent, it too begins to show some cracks. The screenplay is incredible, giving the back-and-forth between athletic teenagers a naturalistic feel sorely missing from many dubs. Despite a very smart ear for casual dialogue, it never strays too far from the intent of the show. Greg Ayers is a tremendous standout as Abe -- this rare opportunity for him to act more and screech less proves the guy has more chops than he's usually allowed to exercise. Other notables include Todd Haberkorn as the lovable spaz Tajima, and Joel McDonald as conflicted team captain Hanai. But as more rival teams are introduced Funimation clearly starts to run out of top-tier voice talent. There are a few decent actors on each team (usually the characters with more lines), but lesser ones tend to fare worse and worse as episodes go by. Name pronunciations have always been a problem for this cast, and this volume is rife with inconsistencies. The final episode, a side story involving none of the main cast, is a significant misstep, featuring uniformly stiff performances, off-meaning intonation, and some truly mangled Japanese names.

These are ultimately nit-picks; the project as a whole is still solid, and I generally prefer Funimation's less-polished, more natural sounding cast to the too-perfect Japanese. (Tsubasa Yonaga's Mihashi is so effeminate that I was truly shocked to find he wasn't voiced by a woman!) Moreover, these episodes are so heavy on the expository monologues that trying to watch the subtitled version would be tantamount to reading a reference book on baseball analysis. With a cast as strong as this one, viewers with an open mind towards dubs would be best served giving this one a chance.

Funimation's 2-disc set is decent, albeit barebones, featuring only clean opening and endings as extras. The video looks solid, though a bit noisier than an all-digital production this recent should. (That noise might be a faux film grain effect in the animation to soften the harsh "digital" lines -- it's hard to tell.) Despite the amount of video on the discs, the compression looks completely decent. Funimation's quality-destroying habit of including the Japanese credits as an alternate angle was retired last year, so if you haven't seen one of their discs in a while they finally look as good as any other recent anime DVD.

The problems with this second half of Big Windup! are not enough to derail the show, but they add up to the point where the experience is way less satisfying than it should be. But such is the power of its characters and their truly vivid, fleshed out personalities; their charisma, their overall likability, that I still can't help but love the whole package. For all its faults, Big Windup! is still a must-watch. Its slightly overblown emphasis on male bonding will keep slash fans satisfied, while the rest of us can enjoy the deftly handled sports and the fun, quirky cast. This isn't the way I'd hoped the series would end, but I'm hoping that with any luck, it won't be.

Despite all of that, it's still surprisingly involving. Having drawn last year's champions as their first game in the sudden-death tournament, the team of freshmen from Nishiura High School enter the game with a sense of calm. It's a calm that won't last very long, as ace pitcher/abused puppy Mihashi gets too excited and over-exerts himself, causing catcher Abe and coach Momoe to worry he might not last the whole game. Tajima, who usually can hit just about any ball coming his way, struggles to make contact with rival team Tōsei's pitches. The rest of the team has their doubts too, and an ever-present rain threatens to get the game called off at any possible moment.

These days men confuse confidence with money and their ability to afford extravagant material possessions. Possessions and financial accomplishments do not intrigue real wholesome women. It only attracts those who are out to find an opportunity. Opportunity based relationships offer nothing but heartache and disappointment. The ability to afford what you want is OK, but that doesn't make you more of a catch. There has to be more to a person.

The character of a man will show his confidence. Integrity is the key. The way a man interacts with his co-workers, teammates,and family. A confident man can handle a relationship and relate to women on many levels.There has to be compassion and understanding. Confident men are willing to go the extra mile for the woman in his life.

When it comes to intimacy, the confident man is not selfish. He knows in order to be fulfilled everyone must feel satisfied. He is not afraid to ask questions or to listen. These men will pay attention to everything around them. He not only expresses his self on a physical level but also on an emotional level.

Confident men know who they are and they are able to stay focused. They pay attention and step in to make life better. Its an attraction that no woman can resist.

First, being single makes the individual to have total control of life. No one dictates you on what you need to do and no one even stop you from doing things you like to do. And definitely no one will block your way when you want to go out shopping and buy tazer gun for your protection. Every decision you makes is up to you and you alone.

Second, they get to enjoy and embrace life. Some people are afraid of handling marriage responsibilities that is why they end up getting a divorce because of misunderstandings or affairs. Enjoy being single. If you are not yet ready to enter in a mature relationship, then enjoy every minute of your life being single because once you step into a relationship, you will never have all the chance to have fun and bond with your friends.

Third, single individuals get to focus with their careers. There is a big opportunity for career growth and development when having a single life. It is easy for them to travel and look for many job opportunities in other countries without worrying anything.

Fourth, your focus is yourself. Unlike when in a relationship, you need to compromise and see to it that your partner is always happy. There is no need to sacrifice when living in a single life because your own focus is to make yourself happy and provide yourself with all your needs.

Fifth, you get to live a peaceful life. Going solo means you have all the bed by yourself, the room and the house and no one to share your stuff with, and definitely no one to squabble with the remote control. There are no issues that you need to worry about and no hassles as to who fix the mess. If you have a partner, things have to be shared and you have to be understanding. Review:

As the first scenes of the show will attest, the initial draw of Basilisk is the same as that of other ninja-oriented shows such as Ninja Scroll or even Naruto: weird, way-out ninja-fightin' action. But, as the numbers of living ninja in the show drop ever lower, so does the action quotient. This volume features no more than a handful of actual combat sequences, yet remains as—if not more—engaging than previous volumes due to the skill with which the show keeps the roundelay of murder and mayhem turning, raising the stakes—both narrative and emotional—with each new battle.

Most of the earlier fights involved shallowly characterized cast members fighting for strategic reasons (or no reason at all) but, beginning with Okoi and Nenki's battle in the previous volume, the fights have suddenly become exceedingly personal, a series of all-too-understandable vendettas to avenge past brutalities. The violence is often perversely satisfying (as well as packing a number of visceral thrills), but it is endlessly self-perpetuating and the consequences, both immediate and delayed, tend to be soberingly cruel.

It also helps that the characters are slowly growing. While not particularly deep, their personalities and motivations are now clearly delineated, creating a show that has not only shown a willingness to kill off its characters, but is also populated with characters that deserve to live (as well as some that you desperately wish wouldn't. Die green slimy thing, die!). As a result, the slowly spiraling war of attrition is as unbearable as it is compulsively watchable.

Impatient viewers and gorehounds be forewarned though: this volume finds Basilisk in full buildup mode. It is composed almost entirely of heightening tensions, discussions (episode 10, a recap, is 100% discussion), and slowly evolving conflicts that will bear fruit only in future episodes. The ninja action, while bizarre, bloody, and occasionally possessed of a grotesque beauty, is quick and relatively infrequent.

There isn't anything on par with Okoi's arboreal adventures in this volume, but it does have its own highlights: Gennosuke's dojutsu (those eyes!), a single instance of Nenki's hair-manipulation, smaller details such as a memorable decapitation, and some well-placed camera movements during Oboro's romantic recollections. The Gonzo brand of 3D CGI is minimized, limited in this outing to a few water effects and Hotarubi's butterflies. Some of the clumsier elements of earlier episodes—specifically, the stiffly animated gooey liquid man-thing—are absent (barring flashbacks). Enjoyment of the character designs will hinge heavily on one's tolerance for the outrageous grotesqueries of the more freakish ninja (and Tokugawa's repulsive, deformed chin). Normal characters, though, are attractive, with dark, distinctive hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Gennosuke in particular is a perfectly modulated blend of masculine beauty and fearsome strength. Rain-drenched landscapes of mud and grime make for a grim palette of dank greys and browns that matches the dark mood that predominates. Buildings are detailed and textured such that they successfully evoke a medieval atmosphere (particularly Tokugawa's castle).

The soundtrack, laden with eerie chants and trilling vocal melodies demonstrates, once again, that one of the finest instruments available is the human voice. Sad, unsettling, melancholy, and rousing, the music matches the show at every turn, used ably (if somewhat unimaginatively) to support the visuals. It tends towards omnipresence, but is also aware that a little silence or falling rain can speak volumes that no music could ever hope to communicate. The opening and ending are mildly rocking tunes of questionable appropriateness and only mild interest; not bad, but not particularly memorable either.

Those familiar with Funimation's methodology will know what to expect from the dub: a script that sacrifices fidelity on the altar of natural flow, smooth delivery, fine acting, modified episode titles. The dub is, in terms of acting, almost equal to its Japanese predecessor (with the possible exception of Oboro), and despite some anachronistic speech patterns, sounds natural and unforced. There are some puzzling modifications in the English script that seem too extreme to be reasonably included under the banner of necessity. They never cross the line to become actual revisions as they don't betray the feel, purpose or outcome of any scene (other than slightly softening Tenzen's scheming nature), but they will drive sticklers for accuracy quite mad. Songs are not dubbed into English (as Funimation has done in the past).

Textless songs and trailers aside, the only extras on this volume are the original Japanese extras. It's a solid hour of select cast members recollecting and reflecting on Basilisk and just goofing off. It isn't terribly informative, but is fun enough to be excused for it.

Now that the cycle of violence is fully underway, Basilisk feels less like some freakshow variation on the WWF and more like a purposeful narrative. Now the gaps between fights reveal important aspects of the survivors' mentalities, and each confrontation is, if not rife, at least tinged with meaning and purpose (at the very least as one more cog in the meathouse grinder of fate). It isn't—and never will be—anything more than a historical drama, but at least it isn't just ninja killing other ninja any more.

In a Tuesday blog entry, the production committee of the Mayoi Neko Overrun! anime series has revealed the reason why the director of the anime is officially listed as "Under Negotiation." Every episode will have a different director. Shin Itagaki directed the first episode, Kenichi Yatani directed the second, and Yoshimasa Hiraike directed the third.

Itagaki was replaced as the series director of Basquash! anime just two months into its television broadcast last year, but he revealed in his Web Anime Style Column in December that he was preparing to direct an unspecified new bishōjo anime in 2010. (He also contributed to Seiji Mizushima and Gainax's Hanamaru Kindergarten anime earlier this year.) Yatani was an episode director on Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, and Hiraike is also currently directing the Working!! anime.

Inuyama Castle

Today I visited Inuyama, a small city just north of Nagoya, which attracts tourists with a handful of relatively interesting sights, including an old feudal castle, an excellent open air museum and lots of cherry trees.

Only four out of Japan's approximately one hundred remaining feudal castles are designated national treasures, the highest national designation for cultural assets. Two days ago, Scott visited one of the four, Himeji Castle, followed by my report yesterday from Hikone Castle, another of them. Without intent, today's report brought me to yet another of them, Inuyama Castle. No report, however, is planned for Matsumoto tomorrow, where the fourth stands.

Inuyama Castle is considered to have Japan's oldest standing castle tower, dating from 1537. The castle is relatively small, but from its top floor balcony it offers dramatic views over the Kiso River, which flows below and is nicknamed Japan's Rhine River for the landscape's apparent similarity with Germany's Rhine Region.

Cherry trees are planted all over the castle grounds and along its approaches. When I visited today, the trees were at full bloom, although some of them have started to drop some first petals. Nevertheless, the sight of the blossoms should remain beautiful for a few days to come.

Most of Inuyama's other tourist attractions also have their share of cherry trees, including Urakuen Garden at the foot of the castle, and Meiji Mura, an excellent open air museum devoted to Japan's early modern architecture of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), located a 30 minute bus ride from Inuyama Station.

As everyone knows, there is an art to holding chopsticks. However, it is an art that even a westerner can master. I received many genuine compliments about my chopstick holding while I lived in Japan. In fact, my wife would agree that I even hold them better than her!

So, how do you hold chopsticks?

1. The top chopstick is held just as you would hold a pencil for writing.

2. The top chopstick is the only one that moves. It moves in an up and down motion like you are writing tally marks. As it rests on top of the middle finger, the middle finger lifts the chopstick up (or open) and the index finger moves it down (or closes).

3. The bottom chopstick is placed between your thumb and forefinger and his held in place with the finger print face of your ring finger with some pressure.

4. Once again, the bottom chopstick DOES NOT move! A trick I use with my son is having him try to take the bottom chopstick out of my hand. This teaches him to hold on to it quite tightly. Then it is my turn to take it away from him. He loves playing this game with our Japanese chopsticks!

5. The final thing to remember is that your chopsticks will never touch each other. This means the back side by your thumbs will not touch and, of course, you should be picking up food with the other end, which will be lodged quite snuggly between the other ends!

More About Chopsticks!

-Chopsticks are called HASHI in Japanese. The intonation drops downward on the SHI. If you pronounce the word with a lift in intonation at the end you are saying "bridge" instead of "chopsticks"!

-Never "stick" your chopsticks into a bowl of rice. This is a symbol for death.

-Never pass food with your chopsticks, this is also a symbol of death. After a person dies, his bones are passed in this manner.

-Never move dishes around with your chopsticks!

-Never grab something else (i.e. a glass, cup, etc.) while the the chopsticks are still in your hand. Put them down first.

-Hold your chopsticks about 3-5 cm from the tip. An old wives tale says that a man who holds his chopsticks far from the tip will live far away from his parents!

-When you use WARIBASHI (disposable wooden chopsticks), place them back in the paper holder when you are finished.

-Don't point to something or someone with your chopsticks.

_When eating something communally, use the back end of the chopsticks to take the item from the dish. Then use the front end, again, to eat the item.

-Regardless if you are a righty or a lefty, when you place the chopsticks while setting the table, they always point to the left!

-You can purchase "training" chopsticks to use until you are able to use the adult ones.

-Practice picking up M&Ms or Skittles to really test your skill!

If you have paid close attention, then I am sure you, too, will master the art of holding and using chopsticks. Just remember, it takes time and patience. Don't give up!

Travelers like me know that April is the time to see the cherry blossom in Tokyo, the largest city in Asia. I see Tokyo as the most western face of the east. The buildings are tall and modern western style.

For me Tokyo is so fascinating. Even I have only a few days in this city, I experienced everything, from the mystique of the old eastern world to the techno-crazed life of the 21st century. Tokyo is a must see coz' I see it as a treasure trove of things to see and do. Here are a few ideas to build on during our visit to Tokyo.

Classical Japan: After the rush of jet travel, with my sister Susie, we spent our first day unwinding in the gardens adjoining Imperial Palace. Since the month is April, the cherry blossoms are at their best and it is a sight that I never tire of. We took the time to admire the floral displays of magnolias, azaleas and irises that we saw as we strolled through the gardens on our way to the Museum of the Imperial Collection. This is the home to the Imperial family's treasure-trove of art. Our travel was well worth the experience.

Shopping. We started in Tokyo's Ginza district by standing in front of the Sony building. I've found some of the world's best shopping here. My funds are too limited for a serious retail therapy. Spending a little is a treat on its own. When I reached Takeshita Street, It has the latest fashions from around the world with specialty shops and designer boutiques. At the next intersection is Mitsukoshi department store at Harumi Avenue. Also at Harumi is Sake Center. I sampled the various rice wines and I have no doubt you will come across that too during your stay in Tokyo.

DINING. One of the great things about Japan is that I would have to be very unlucky to find any food stall or restaurant that isn't spotlessly clean. A taste of sushi, one of renowned dishes, I tried the Restaurant Sushi-ko. Here I discovered that they have been serving sushi for more than 120 years. Huh! The next day, we tried Robata Honten, coz' we're looking for the meals that the average Japanese enjoy. We ate mixtures of dishes like stews, fish and vegetables.

Nightlife. Ginza, Shibayu, Akasaka and Shinjuku are the city's lively places that I find the most interesting restaurants, bars and clubs. Many establishments are offering a range of entertainments depending on the crowd. Some bars copied the interior of an English pub, a Spanish style salsa bar and even a Wild-West Salon bar. We specially enjoy the Japanese pubs that serve a good range of drinks and bar-snacks. Open from 6 p.m. to around midnight. Modern hotel bars with great views are always popular .

The Intercontinental, New Otani, Park Hyatt, Hilton, Nikko and the Akasaka Prince are just few of the excellent ones I find in Tokyo. It's good that we brought some stuff that makes it appropriately to mix comfortably with the well-educated, elegant crowds that we found in the hotel.

On our way home we tried our luck at the national obsession - a game of pachinko at one of the many pinball parlors. Just a few minutes or so, we feel like local, a good feeling.
